South Bay Scarborough offers a delightful mix of experiences. Here, you'll find the classic allure of a sandy beach alongside the rugged charm of a rocky coastline, perfect for sunbathing, exploring tide pools.

Sun, Sand, and Endless Fun

The heart of South Bay is its expansive sandy beach. This is the ideal spot for families to build sandcastles, enjoy refreshing dips in the sheltered waters, or simply relax on the golden sand and soak up the sunshine. Donkey rides, a cherished British seaside tradition, are a guaranteed hit with children. Surfers can catch waves when conditions are right, adding an element of adventure to your beach day.

A Rocky Adventure Awaits

The southern end of South Bay boasts a rocky shoreline, a haven for nature lovers and curious explorers. Clamber over the rocks at low tide, searching for fascinating sea creatures in the rock pools. Explore hidden coves and uncover the beauty of a more rugged seaside landscape.

A Vibrant Promenade for Everyone

The lively promenade stretches along the entire South Bay, encompassing both the sandy and rocky sections. Here, amusement arcades with classic games and thrilling rides provide endless entertainment. Souvenir shops overflowing with seashells and seaside trinkets are perfect for picking up a memento of your trip. Indulge in a scoop of creamy ice cream or savor a plate of piping hot fish and chips – quintessential seaside treats not to be missed.

A Glimpse of Seaside History: The Holbeck Hotel

The rocky southern part of South Bay once housed the Holbeck Hall Hotel. This grand hotel, built in 1879, was a popular destination for seaside vacations. Unfortunately, in 1993, due to a combination of factors including heavy rain and potential drainage issues, a major landslide occurred. The landslide caused a dramatic collapse, with parts of the Holbeck Hall Hotel falling into the sea. Today, only remnants of the hotel remain, serving as a reminder of the area's fascinating, and sometimes dramatic, history.

Relaxation by the Sea: The Scarborough Spa

A short walk north along the promenade from the rocky southern section brings you to a different kind of seaside attraction – The Scarborough Spa. This magnificent Victorian complex, built in the 1880s, is a grand landmark situated beside the sea in South Bay. While not technically a spa in the traditional sense anymore, it offers a place to unwind and soak in the seaside atmosphere.

Take a stroll through the majestic rooms and imagine grand balls and orchestra performances that were once held here. Explore the exhibits detailing the spa's fascinating history, or catch a live show or concert at the Spa Theatre or the Grand Hall. You can also grab a bite to eat at Farrer's Bar and Restaurant, which boasts beautiful sea views.

A Seaside Tradition: The Clock Cafe

No trip to South Bay would be complete without a visit to the Clock Cafe. Nestled halfway up the cliffs overlooking the beach, this charming cafe has been serving tea and light refreshments for over 100 years. Soak in the panoramic views of the bay while enjoying a refreshing drink or a classic British cream tea – a delightful way to relax and refuel after a day of exploring. But be sure to come prepared, as the Clock Cafe accepts cash or bank transfer only.

They are, however, renowned for their delicious breakfasts, making them a perfect spot to start your seaside adventure. Whether you fancy a hearty full English or a lighter option like perfectly cooked kippers, the Clock Cafe offers a delicious way to fuel up for a day of fun in South Bay.

Exploring the Harbour and Beyond

South Bay boasts a bustling harbour, teeming with colourful fishing boats and pleasure crafts. Take a scenic boat trip around the bay for stunning coastal views from a different perspective. For an adrenaline rush, opt for a thrilling speedboat ride across the waves.

A Touch of History

History buffs won't be disappointed. The majestic Scarborough Castle, overlooking South Bay, offers a fascinating glimpse into the town's rich past. Explore its ruins and learn about its role in defending the coastline.
